European Union observers have begun patrolling areas around Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
On Wednesday, the civilian monitors entered a buffer zone between Georgia and the separatist regions, despite initial fears that Russian forces would not let them. Under a French-brokered ceasefire, Russian forces are to withdraw from the buffer zone in Georgian territory by October 10. Russia says it will keep troops in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
