The top American NATO-commander in Afghanistan has asked for 10,000 more troops, saying he needed them as quickly as possible.
General David McKiernan based his request on a rising insurgency that could worsen even more. McKiernan was speaking to reporters at the Pentagon in Washington. He said there has been a significant increase in foreign fighters coming in from neighbouring Pakistan, including Chechens, Uzbeks, Saudis and even Europeans. The US general added that besides extra troops, more had to be done to strengthen the Afghan government and economy.
