European Union observers have started to monitor a ceasefire between Russia and Georgia.
The civilian monitors entered a buffer zone between Georgia and its separatists regions, despite initial fears that Russian forces would not let them. The head of the approximately 300-strong EU observer mission, Hansjoerg Haber, said he was confident of Russian cooperation. According to a French brokered ceasefire, Russian forces are to withdraw from the buffer zone in Georgian territory by October 10.
