German media say that the premier of Germany's southern state of Bavaria, Gьnter Beckstein, has handed in his resignation following his Christian Social Union party's massive losses in Sunday's state election.
No successor has been named. On Tuesday, the chairman of the CSU, Erwin Huber, also resigned as a result of the election failure, in which the party lost its absolute majority for the first time in almost fifty years. The CSU, the sister party of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, will now be forced to form a coalition to be able to rule.
