1802: GOAL Zenit St Petersburg 1-2 Real Madrid
Rafael van der Vaart's shot from the edge of the box takes a massive deflection off the Zenit defender and falls to Ruud van Nistelrooy, who sidefoots it into the far corner. If the defending so far is anything to go by, there are almost certainly more goals in this match.

That had been coming. Radek Sirl provides the cross from the left and Danny stabs in his second goal for his new club. The Ј24m striker gets ahead of marker Gabriel Heinze, who rather foolishly attempts to clear with a diving header.
1755: "Celtic to shock the world and win away from home tonight 2-0. Beer has activated the optimistic part of my brain."

1751: Zenit starting to threaten now. Radek Sirl sends over a brilliant cross from the left - but Pavel Pogrebnyak manages to trip team-mate Andrei Arshavin as they go for the same ball. Moments later, some terrible Madrid defending lets the hosts in but Iker Casillas bravely dives on the ball ahead of Pogrebnyak, the keeper taking a kick in the chest for his troubles.
1747: "I'm not sure if there's much you can do about this, but apparently the driver is 'fixing a problem' with my train home, and I'd love to get back for the football... Failing that, a comfortable win for United will do."

More chance with the latter I reckon. Also, I'd be worried if your driver's having to fix the train as well as drive it.
1744: Every time Madrid come forward, you worry for Zenit. Arjen Robben takes advantage of the defender's slip to get to the byeline but his cross is stabbed behind for a corner. Still, that goal hasn't quietened the home fans one bit. They're making an almighty noise.
1740: "Re 17.22: C section. Much quicker. On another note, which hospital is it which forms a queue for those presently giving birth? Very British. And proper."

1739: "That was a bit quick. I thought Zenit were meant to be good."

They might be good in attack, but their defence looks very shaky indeed
1735: GOAL Zenit St Peterburg 0-1 Real Madrid
Moments after Vyacheslav Malafeyev pulls off a magnificent stop to deny Gonzalo Higuain, Real Madrid take the lead anyway. Rafael van der Vaart slides the ball across from the right and Tomas Hubocan provides a very tidy finish for an own goal.
1733: Cracking atmosphere at the Petrovsky Stadium as the players line up for the all-important Champions League anthem. It's a chilly 7C in St Petersburg as the game kicks off...
1725: Madrid coach Bernd Schuster springs a small surprise by leaving club legend Raul on the bench. Zenit line up as expected, with Andrei Arshavin returning to the line-up after missing their last game through suspension.
Zenit St Petersburg: Malafeev, Puygrenier, Aniukov, Hubocan, Sirl, Zyryanov, Danny, Denisov, Tymoschuk, Pogrebniak, Arshavin.
Subs: Contofalsky, Kim, Dominguez, Tekke, Shirokov, Faitzulin, Ricksen.
Real Madrid: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Cannavaro, Heinze, Van der Vaart, Diarra, Robben, De la Red, Higuain, van Nistelrooy. Subs: Dudek, Raul, Saviola, Marcelo, Drenthe, Miguel Torres, Javi Garcia.
1722: Always one of the highlights of my day, looking at the weird and wacky texts in our inbox. My favourite today: "in a que to hospital. my wife is in labour. help." Yikes, what should I do? 1715: Poor old Arsene Wenger. Saturday's stunning defeat by West Brom, er Hull, er whoever... left the Arsenal boss feeling "physically sick", but I know something that'll make him feel better: matchday two of the Champions League! Fresh from a Wenger-style carpeting, his boys are up against Porto at the Emirates tonight. More of that later… but first it's Real Madrid at Zenit St Petersburg. Mmmm, tasty.
