Chinese police have arrested at least 22 people suspected of the production of melamine, the chemical found in milk products which have made thousands of babies ill.
The apprehensions took place in northern Hebei province, the centre of the milk scandal. Police discovered over 220 kilograms of melamine during raids on dairy farms and milk purchasing stations. They said the toxic chemical was produced at underground plants and then sold to dairies where added to milk products to make them appear richer in protein. As a result of the scandal, countries around the world have removed Chinese milk products from their shelves.
