Singapore's veteran opposition politician J.
B. Jeyaretnam has died of a heart attack, aged 82. In 1981, Jeyaretnam became the first opposition politician elected to the Singaporean parliament, serving as MP from 1981 to 1986 and again from 1997 to 2001. He was disqualified from sitting in parliament and working as a lawyer for several years on various legal charges, seen by many as politically motivated.
