The Social Democrats remain the strongest party in Austria despite big losses. Its head, Werner Faymann, said he would seek to form a coalition with his junior partner up till now, the conservative People's Party. But differences between the two centrist parties led to snap elections being called in the first place. Jцrg Haider, the leader of the right-wing Alliance for the Future of Austria, has said he was prepared to join a new government with the conservatives.
