The United Nations reports that some 20,000 people from Pakistan's north-western tribal region of Bajaur have fled to Afghanistan this summer.
The UN High Commission for Refugees in Afghanistan said they left their homes due to a rising intensity in fighting between Pakistani government forces and militants. The UN reported that in the last two weeks alone, over 600 families have crossed the border into Afghanistan. Violence has risen in recent months in Pakistan's north-west, which the US says has become a safe haven for al-Qaeda and Taliban militants.
