The election was called after the left-right "grand" coalition broke up after only 18 months in government. The latest opinion polls have shown the Social Democrats slightly ahead with 26-29 percent of votes, compared to the conservative People's Party with 25-27 percent. Analysts have predicted that right-wing parties could make gains, as voters appear disenchanted with leading parties. The voting age has been dropped for this election, with 16 and 17-year-olds being allowed to vote for the first time in a European Union country.
