Steinmeier told the UN General Assembly that "carelessness, greed and lack of reason" had thrown the world back by years. He also warned of the danger of further undermining international crisis diplomacy, citing the military conflict in Georgia as the most recent example. "An entire region is on the verge of disaster through war and destruction", he said. Steinmeier called nuclear armament one of the biggest challenges, cautioning Iran not to overtax the patience of the international community. In addition, he dismissed statements made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the UN as blatantly antisemitist, irresponsible and intolerable.
