Nepal elects first president ... agreed on the wording of a new resolution on Iran's nuclear programme to present to the United Nations Security Council.
Diplomatic sources said the agreement followed a meeting of the five permanent Security Council members plus Germany on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York. They said it contained no provisions for new sanctions on Iran but simply reaffirmed previous rulings. The talks came two days after Russia had pulled out of a scheduled ministerial gathering to discuss sanctions. Western nations suspect Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, while Tehran asserts that its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only.
