Tribal elders and local officials in Turkmenistan have approved a new constitution that allows for the formation of multiple political parties.
The People's Council in the capital Ashgabat approved a constitution that will double the size of parliament and give it the right to pass constitutional amendments and censure the president. Turkmenistan, strategically located between the Caspian Sea and Afghanistan, is seen by Western governments and multinational corporations as a potential key energy source, which could reduce dependency on Russian gas.
