His mandate runs until general elections are held next year. One of Motlanthe's first tasks will be to constitute a new cabinet, after 11 of Mbeki's cabinet ministers and three deputy ministers resigned on Tuesday. Mbeki bowed to an ANC call to resign following a damning court ruling that hinted he was instrumental in a decision to prosecute his longtime rival and ANC leader Jacob Zuma.
