Tens of thousands of health care workers from around Germany have demonstrated in Berlin for additional government funding for hospitals and clinics.
According to the umbrella group organising the protest, one in ten German hospitals have been forced to close since the mid-1980s. One in five hospital beds has disappeared in the same period while the number of patients has risen by 17 percent. Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet approved some three billion euros in extra funding on Wednesday. But protesters said the 2,100 financially strapped clinics and hospitals needed at least 6.7 billion euros in order to avoid the loss of thousands of jobs and further reduction in the quality of care.
