World leaders are gathering in New York for the opening of the United Nations annual general meeting.
The global financial crisis is expected to overshadow issues such as the war in Georgia, Iran's nuclear ambitions and human rights abuses in Sudan's Darfur region. United States President George W. Bush is expected to address the Assembly for the last time as head of state. He is to meet Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari before the summit to discuss tensions over US incursions into Pakistani territory in the fight against Islamic militants in Afghanistan.
