The United Nations has urged Burma to release all political prisoners as part of the country's so called seven-step "roadmap to democracy". Human Rights Watch estimates that Burma has more than 2,000 political prisoners, but the military regime denies that it jails people for their political or religious views. Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the last 19 years under house arrest.
