South Africa's ruling African National Congress party has picked a new president for the country.
ANC officials said the party chose its deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe, to serve as head of state until elections are held in seven months' time. He replaces the outgoing Thabo Mbeki, who bowed to pressure and formally resigned as South African president on Sunday, following a long-running power struggle with ANC head Jacob Zuma.
