Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has chosen Taro Aso to succeed Yasuo Fukuda as its party leader and candidate to be the country's next prime minister.
The LDP elected Aso by landslide over four other candidates. The former foreign minister and LDP secretary general is expected to become prime minister on Wednesday when the lower house of parliament, the Diet, meets. The LDP holds a majority in the chamber. Fukuda resigned earlier this month after less than one year in office.
