Thabo Mbeki has formally resigned as the president of South Africa. He announced his resignation on Sunday, one day after his ruling African National Congress party demanded he step down in the aftermath of a long-running power struggle between him and ANC head Jacob Zuma.
In the live television address, Mbeki denied accusations that he had interfered with justice to push corruption charges against Zuma. He said he would rule as interim president until a successor is named. The ANC has not said who will become the country's next president, but parliamentary speaker Baleka Mbete is considered the favourite.
