South African President Thabo Mbeki has announced his formal resignation in a televised address to the nation.
Mbeki's resignation comes a day after his ruling African National Congress party demanded he step down in the aftermath of a long-running power struggle between him and ANC head Jacob Zuma. Mbeki also used his speech to deny accusations that he had interfered with justice to push corruption charges against Zuma. The 66-year-old Mbeki succeeded Nelson Mandela as president in June 1999. He is the country's first democratically elected president to be forced out of office before the end of his term, which was due to expire in mid-2009.
