Earlier in the day, the premier told his cabinet he was planning on handing in his mandate, following the election last week of Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni as the new leader of his ruling Kadima Party. The move was merely a formality, as Olmert had announced on July 30 that he would step down to battle graft allegations. Olmert is likely to remain caretaker prime minister until a new coalition government is formed or a new parliamentary election held.
