Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has announced his resignation at a Sunday cabinet meeting, after Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's victory in a party leadership vote last week.
The move was merely a formality, as Olmert had announced on July 30 that he would step down to battle graft allegations. Olmert must still submit his resignation to President Shimon Peres, who will grant Livni 42 days to form a new government and avert snap general elections.
