South African President Thabo Mbeki has agreed to resign after his African National Congress (ANC) party asked him to leave office.

Mbeki meets Mugabe, snubbed by Tsvangirai ... formalise the resignation procedure. The ANC's decision came a week after a High Court dismissed graft charges against ANC leader Jacob Zuma and suggested Mbeki may have conspired to push corruption charges against his long-time rival. Zuma was expected to succeed Mbeki in scheduled elections next year. Mbeki has ruled South Africa since taking over from Nelson Mandela in 1999.
