A police spokesman said public safety was at stake, after police battled with left-wing supporters who flooded into the city centre to stage counter-demonstrations. The nationalist group Pro-Cologne had called the rally to oppose a decision by local authorities to build one of Europe's biggest mosque's in Germany's fourth largest city. The group had invited nationalists from across Europe to gather in Cologne to protest against what it called the "Islamification and immigration invasion" of Germany and Europe. An estimated 120,000 Muslims live in Cologne. The city is widely viewed as one of Germany's most tolerant and well integrated major cities.
