A massive suicide truck bomb has killed at least 40 people in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
Officials fear the death toll would rise as 200 more people were wounded in the attack on the Marriot Hotel. Six Germans were reportedly among those injured. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast that has been widely condemned by Western powers but Washington said it had the makings of al-Qaeda. New Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari briefly addressed the country afterwards, pledging to rid his country of what he called the "cancer" of terrorism. Pakistan has been facing an increasingly violent Islamist insurgency in its border regions in recent months because of its close ties with the US in the war on terror.
