Since early August Russia has maintained two dozen posts deep inside Georgia after it repelled an attempt by Georgia's government to militarily retake another breakaway pro-Russian region, South Ossetia. Early this week, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, mediating on behalf of the EU, secured a pullback promise from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The deal allows for the deployment of 200 EU observers. Russia has said it will retain several thousand troops in South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Georgia is a key transist region for oil and gas deliveries to the West.
