French President Nicolas Sarkozy has praised Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to Armenia as courageous and historic.
Gul was in Yerevan to watch the world cup soccer qualifying game with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarksyan. His visit marked the first for a Turkish leader since Armenia declared independence from the Soviet Union. Relations between the two countries, which have no diplomatic ties, have been strained since Armenia occupied the Azeri enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh 15 years ago.
