Turkish President Abdullah Gul is in neighbouring Armenia on a historic first visit by a Turkish leader since Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union.
Relations between the two countries, which have no diplomatic ties, have been strained since Armenia occupied the Azeri enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh 15 years ago and by Turkey's refusal to acknowledge as genocide the deaths of up to 1.5 million ethnic Armenians under the Ottoman Empire. Gul will watch the Turkey-Armenia world cup soccer qualifier with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarksyan. Both leaders say they hope the visit will aid security in the Caucasus region. Several hundred angry nationalist protestors lined the route of Gul's motorcade as it made its way into the capital.
