Asif Ali Zadari, the widower of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has won a sweeping victory in Pakistan's presidential election.
Zadari replaces Pervez Musharraf who resigned last month facing parliamentary impeachment. The Pakistan People's Party now holds the presidency and leads the government, making Zadari one of the most powerful civilian leaders in Pakistan's 61-year history. Zardari who faces severe economic problems and a rampant Islamist insurgency that is threatening Pakistan's stability has vowed to support the war on terror and reduce the powers of the president.
