06.09.2008 - Czech Greens leader Bursik enumerates successes before vote

Over the past three years, the Greens were transformed from a radical and fundamentalist Czech Greens leader to leave govt if Kuchtova becomes party head ...

party into a realistic and trustworthy party, Bursik said.

Bursik seeks re-election at the congress.

The coalition government, consisting of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), the Christian Democrats and the Greens, is only half-way through its term, Bursik said.

He stressed the ministers for the Greens would need a party in the second half of the term that would back them at various moments such when the Czech Republic would be in charge of the EU foreign policy.

"It would be devastating if there were constant infighting in the party, if we threw blue or orange lemons at one another," Bursik said, hinting at the billboards posted by his biggest rival Dana Kuchtova.

On the billboards, she likened Bursik to the blue lemon as he is allegedly too obliging to the ODS, which has the blue colour as its symbol.

Bursik said it was natural for a centrist party like the Greens to include proponents of cooperation with both the left and the right.

Bursik said realistic approach and search for compromise were needed.

"We will not be winning elections for much time ahead," Bursik said, adding that only presence in the government has taught the party how to cooperate with both the partners and rivals.

"We entered politics with the reputation of a party that is immaculate.

This certainly helped us," Bursik said.

It is vital to keep an important part of this distinctive feature, he added.

"However, to be immaculate alone is not enough to be politically successful," Bursik said.

Bursik said politics was the art of maximum possible, but still he wanted to push through the maximum of the party programme.

"There are still some among us for whom the maximum is too little," Bursik said about his opponents.
