05.09.2008 - Czech opposition criticises ODS deputy Morava

They said Morava's behaviour was inexcusable. The Social Democrats want the police to investigate the case. CSSD deputy group head Michal Hasek said Morava had also harmed the whole ODS. Morava told the media he was considering departing from politics, but he would not resign immediately. The daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) reported that Morava tried to collect discrediting information about various deputies regardless of their party membership and planned to abuse the material to blackmail them. in two "rebellious" deputies - Olga Zubova (junior ruling Greens, SZ) and Vlastimil Tlusty (ODS). Prime Minister and ODS chairman Mirek Topolanek has already condemned this behaviour.

He dismissed the idea that Morava had acted on the ODS's initiative. The KSCM leaderships also sharpy criticised Morava's practices in a statement released today. The Communists recommended that Morava consider leaving the Chamber of Deputies, and they at the same time called on the ODS to take a stance on Morava's "obscure mafia-like practices." Hasek said Morava's behaviour cannot be excused or understood. He primarily condemned that Morava attempted to get Zubova's daughter involved in the political game. The Communists noted that the lower house's mandate and immunity committee should immediately deal with the case. Hasek, on his part, said he is convinced that the police should investigate the case. "If there is a suspicion that someone planned to blackmail another person, let the police investigate it," Hasek said. Miloslav Kala (CSSD), head of the lower house mandate and immunity committee, points out that the committee can deal with the matter only on the basis of a submitted suggestion. "The mandate and immunity committee does not launch any proceedings at its own initiative," Kala told CTK. Zubova, for instance, could turn to the committee if she felt harmed by Morava's act, or the police could contact the committee if any violation of law were uncovered, Kala explained. He added that the committee would then definitely deal with the case.
