Her visit marks the full renewal of US relations with Tripoli which were suspended in 1981 when the US called Libya a supporter of terrorism. Gadhafi announced in December 2003 that the northern African country was renouncing weapons of mass destruction following months of secret talks with the United States and Britain. The US hopes to send a signal to Iran and North Korea that they could benefit from a rapprochement with Western nations.
