Nor did the court arrive at the conclusion last year that Kus had harmed the ministry.Ahead of the latest regional elections four years ago, Kus submitted to the CSSD his negative screening certificate though the ministry says he had knowingly collaborated with the Communist secret service StB before 1989.Under the screening (lustration) law from the early 1990s, former StB collaborators, senior communist officials and members of the communist para-military units are banned from high posts in state administration. Screening certificates for applicants are issued by the Interior Ministry.The police accused Kus three times in connection with the forged certificate. First, they accused him of forgery, but later they withdrew the accusation as it turned out that the certificate Kus presented to the CSSD was not an officially verified copy.Second, the police accused Kus of harming the CSSD but later they failed to specify how exactly he had harmed the party.Only their third accusation, of harming the ministry, led to his being charged, tried and now convicted.According to the media information, Kus is a former elite Communist intelligence agent who infiltrated the Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia and Poland before 1989.
