US Vice President Dick Cheney has used a visit to Georgia to assure Tblisi of US support following its recent military conflict with Russia.
After meeting with President Mikhail Saakashvili in the Georgian capital, Cheney stressed the need to resolve the status of Georgia's two separatist regions. Cheney is the highest-ranking US official to visit Georgia since it tried to retake control of the breakaway region of South Ossetia by force early last month. Georgia detains 14 Russian troops ... and tanks crushed Georgian forces and pushed deep into the former-Soviet state's territory. Cheney visited Georgia as part of a tour of three former Soviet republics. He is now in Ukraine.
