Assad has meanwhile hosted a summit for talks on Lebanon and Israel in Damascus. The summit was attended by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, as well as French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy, whose country holds the revolving European presidency, has said he hoped France and the EU could play a large role as peacemakers in the Middle East. He is the first Western head of state to visit Syria since the 2005 murder of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri, which was widely blamed on Damascus.
