French President Nicolas Sarkozy is travelling to Damascus for a four-way summit to promote peace negotiations between Syria and Israel.
Sarkozy is to meet his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad ahead of joint talks with regional mediators Turkey and Qatar. Before leaving Paris, Sarkozy said Syria and France were key to Middle East peace. Negotiations on an Israeli-Syrian peace deal broke down in 2000 over the fate of the Golan Heights, which Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War.
