Barroso points out importance of atomic power ... Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso says Serbia could be granted the status of a candidate for EU membership as soon as next year.
Belgrade had hoped to become a candidate by the end of this year. Following a meeting with Serbian President Boris Tadic in Brussels, Barroso said Belgrade still had to meet all of the EU's conditions for being granted candidate status. But he also said that the bloc should reward Belgrade for the recent capture of indicted war criminal Radovan Karadzic by implementing a deal on trade liberalisation.
