The prime minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani, has escaped an apparent assassination attempt unharmed.
A government spokesman told reporters that shots were fired at a motorcade carrying Gilani as it was travelling along a main road near the capital, Islamabad. He said two of the shots, fired from an assault rifle, had hit the prime minister's car, but that the bullets had failed to penetrate the vehicle's armour. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Gilani is a senior member of the party of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. She was killed in a suicide bombing while campaigning for a general election late last year.
