African heads of state have been gathering in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, for the funeral of late President Levy Mwanawasa. Mwanawasa, who died on 19 August in France aged 59 following a stroke, took office as president in 2001 and was re-elected in 2006.
Among the leaders attending the funeral is Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, whom Mwanawasa often criticised for his authoritarian rule. Zimbabwean state radio has quoted Mugabe as praising Mwanawasa's courage and frankness. The late president was dubbed "Mr Integrity" for his firm stance on corruption.
