German authorities have disclosed that water leakages into an underground experimental nuclear waste site in northern Germany will require action by 2014 to avoid collapses in the former salt mine.
An interim report accuses a government-owned research institute of failing for decades to disclose a series of mishaps at Asse near Wolfsbüttel. One of our own ... waste. Under former chancellor Gerhard Schöder, the Social Democrats, including Gabriel, decided to phase out all of Germany's nuclear reactors by 2021. In the current grand coalition government Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats favour keeping the reactors running longer.
