experts are now to decide about support for some of eight selected Czech research projects, said Marik, who is heading the team mapping suitable projects in the Czech Republic.

the bilateral agreements complementing the main radar treaty that Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed in Prague in July.

Czech first deputy foreign minister Tomas Pojar today left for the United States where he would, among others, negotiate the funding of Czech research projects.

Marik said eight projects had been shortlisted in eight fields, such as nanomaterial, robotics, laser technology, radiolocation equipment and medicine.

They have been submitted by the Czech Academy of Sciences, universities as well as private firms, he added.

The subsidised projects are to be selected in late September.

The U.S. Missile Defence Agency (MDA) is to release the first subsidy for Czech science by the end of September, Marik said, but he did not specify the sum.

"This is the first funding connected with the radar," Marik noted.

The U.S. radar to be built at the Brdy military district, some 90km southwest of Prague, and a base for ten interceptor missiles in Poland are elements of the U.S. missile defence shields to protect the United States and a large part of the European continent against missiles that states like Iran might launch.

Apart from the main radar treaty, the Czech and Americans must yet complete the SOFA treaty that defines the legal status of U.S. soldiers on Czech territory.

The treaties must be ratified by parliament.

The leftist opposition and a majority of the Czech public are opposed to the radar.
