02.09.2008 - Azinger to name US wildcard picks

US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger will complete his team for the matches in Valhalla later this month when he names his four wildcard picks on Tuesday.
With eight players qualified through the rankings, Azinger will name the rest of the team at 1500 BST.

one place outside the automatic qualifiers, is expected to be selected.
Other players in contention are Scott Verplank, Zach Johnson and DJ Trahan.
JB Holmes, Hunter Mahan, 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson, Woody Austin, Sean O'Hair and Brandt Snedeker are also in the hunt to get in a side that will be without injured world number one Tiger Woods.
The eight players who have already qualified for the US team are Stewart Cink, Phil Mickelson, Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Ben Curtis, Justin Leonard and Boo Weekley.
Azinger, a veteran of four Ryder Cups, is aiming to lead the US to their first Ryder Cup victory since the win at Brookline in 1999.
He was named skipper in November last year and immediately revamped the selection, changing the number of wildcard picks from two to four.
And he is likely to hand Stricker his Ryder Cup debut when he names his wildcards in Manhattan.
Stricker has been one of the steadiest players on the PGA Tour for the last three years but said he had suffered from self-imposed Ryder Cup pressure over the last month.
A four-time winner on the PGA Tour, Stricker has posted five top-10s in 19 starts this season, including a play-off loss at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in January.
"I really made it my number one goal to be on this Ryder Cup team this year," he said. "And I fell short probably by two guys. If Tiger Woods is playing, I miss out by another spot.
"I've been a little tense when I've been out there. I haven't been as calm, bad shots have been affecting me a little bit more than normal just because I know there is a lot riding it seems on every shot.
"I've been trying to push it to the back of my mind but it's been difficult."
And rising star Kim, who qualified automatically for this year's event, says he does not envy Azinger's task.
"I don't want to be in his shoes for sure," he said. "I think it would be easier if he just had two picks. You need to pick a couple veterans, Steve Stricker or Scott Verplank, those guys come to mind, and guys like Hunter Mahan.
"A couple of younger guys and a couple of veterans. I'm just throwing out names. I haven't looked at their stats or anything.
"If the guys play well, you're a genius; if they don't, you made a huge mistake. It's a tough decision."
European captain Nick Faldo named his wildcards on Sunday, ignoring the claims of Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke and instead calling up Ian Poulter and Paul Casey.
Europe have won five of the last six in the biennial event with the US.
This year's event takes place at the Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky from 16-21 September.
