Hurricane Gustav, which had prompted US authorities to evacuate two million people from New Orleans and surrounding areas, has weakened to a category one storm.
It made landfall in a fishing and oil district of Louisiana state but west of the low-lying city which was devastated by Katrina three years ago. In the Caribbean, where Gustav killed 80 people on Saturday, Cuban officials say 100,000 homes were damaged and recovery will be slow.
