NATO's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan says three Afghan children have been killed accidentally by artillery fire.
The incident in Paktika province, close to Pakistan, adds to a mounting toll of civilian casualties during operations by foreign and Afghan troops against resurgent Taliban militants. ISAF says the shell struck a compound and also wounded seven other civilians after one of its patrols called for artillery support while under attack. Investigations are also under way into the killing last week of two children and a woman at a checkpoint manned by Afghan and German troops in the northern province of Kunduz.
