Hurricane Gustav has made landfall in Louisiana southwest of New Orleans shortly after it was downgraded to a Category 2 storm.

Gustav has also affected the US Republican Party's national convention which is scheduled to open this Monday far to the north in Minnesota. Republican presidential candidate, John McCain, has ordered an abbreviated opening session and said it was no time for party politics. Before hitting the US coast, Gustav killed over 80 people as it crossed the Caribbean.
