Hurricane Gustav has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm as it closes in on the US Gulf Coast.
However, the National Hurricane Center emphasised that Gustav with winds of up to 175 kilometres per hour remained an extremely dangerous threat to the state of Louisiana. Nearly two million people have been evacuated from the region, and the city of New Orleans, devastated by Hurricane Katrina three years ago, is almost completely empty.
