European Union leaders are gathering in Brussels to discuss the Georgia crisis and review the EU's relations with Moscow.
Diplomats expect EU leaders to condemn Russia for its military campaign in Georgia and subsequent recognition of the Georgian breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. EU nations are split over how strong the European response to Moscow should be. France, Germany and Italy have said any punitive action against Russia, the bloc's largest energy supplier, would be premature. Other EU states, notably in Eastern Europe would like to see sanctions imposed on Russia. Britain is calling for the EU to suspend partnership talks with Russia. These cover everything from energy and trade ties to dialogue on human rights.
