The US military has handed over security control of the Iraqi province of Anbar to local forces.
Anbar was once a hotbed of the Sunni Arab insurgency. Now the western province is considered a symbol of stability after a grassroots movement led by local tribal heads turned on al-Qaida insurgents. The top American commander in the region, Major General John Kelly said at a ceremony marking the transfer in Ramadi that al-Qaida had not been entirely defeated in Anbar but its end was near. Anbar becomes the first predominantly Sunni Arab region to be transferred to Iraqi security control.
