Magomed Yevloyev ran a regional Web site in the Caucasus, and was a prominent opponent of the pro-Kremlin administration of Ingushetia. A lawyer for the Internet site said Yevloyev was met by police when he landed at Ingushetia's airport and was shot while they drove away. He later died in hospital. Yevloyev is one of the most high-profile journalist deaths since Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead outside her Moscow apartment in 2006, a murder for which Western countries condemned Russia's record on media freedom.
